Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer

Here we talk about peoples experiences of the signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer may not cause symptoms at first. Different types of pancreatic cancer have different symptoms. They can vary from person to person and might be hard to spot. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in your upper abdomen (tummy) or back.
  • Yellowing of your skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Problems or changes with your poo.
  • Weight loss and problems with digestion.

Pain

The pain often starts as general discomfort or pain in the abdomen (tummy) and can spread to the back. The pain may come and go to start with but become constant as time goes on.

People often say that the pain gets worse after meals or when they lie down. Some people have pain at night and it disturbs their sleep.

The pain might be mistaken for a pulled muscle or as joint or bone pain. Pancreatic cancer can be hard to diagnose. Pain in the abdomen can happen for many reasons.

Doctors may think the cause is pancreatitis, an ulcer, a pulled muscle, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a hiatus hernia or gall stones.

Jaundice

A consultant explains why some patients with pancreatic cancer first become jaundiced and why…

Jaundice can cause yellow skin, yellow eyes, dark urine, pale poo and itchy skin. Other symptoms can include nausea and sickness and changes to bowel habit. You may also have a general feeling of discomfort in your tummy.

Hugh’s mother had looked yellow due to jaundice – the first sign that something was wrong. She…

William’s GP and a consultant thought that he had an allergic reaction to penicillin. A blood test showed that he had jaundice, before he turned yellow.

Problems or changes with pooing

Some people we talked to noticed changes to their poo and pee, for example:

  • Pale coloured poo
  • Dark coloured pee
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Very smelly poo
  • Poo floating in the toilet bowl and hard to flush away

Weight loss and problems or changes with digestion

Problems with digestion can be a sign of pancreatic cancer, for example:

  • Feeling sick or being sick
  • Feeling less hungry than usual (poor appetite)
  • Having a strange taste in your mouth (some people said they had a metallic taste)
  • Feeling bloated or other indigestion symptoms.

People may also feel very tired when they have pancreatic cancer. This may be due to loss of muscle strength.

Pancreatic cancer and diabetes

Pancreatic cancer can cause diabetes. Common symptoms of diabetes are hunger, thirst and weight loss. Steve noticed that his vision had deteriorated. He also had leg cramps at night and he was very thirsty. He had recently had his eyes tested so was confused. He went to another optician, who referred him to an ophthalmologist. Meanwhile, Steve decided to have a blood test and a doctor diagnosed diabetes. Then Steve developed jaundice, and his skin became itchy. He had an ultrasound scan, which showed that a tumour in his pancreas had caused his diabetes.

Less common symptoms of pancreatic cancer.

Other people we talked to had more unusual symptoms. Michael said that after drinking wine he would wake in the night with indigestion and ‘the shivers’ and that he would sweat for the next 12 hours. Maureen felt as though she had ‘an alien’ just under her ribs. Davinder and Ben had other unusual symptoms.

Davinder felt very tired and she felt a thumping sensation, a pulsation, under her ribs on the…

Symptoms of rare types of pancreatic cancer

Less common types of pancreatic cancer can have different symptoms or no symptoms at all to start with. Neuroendocrine tumours are a rare type of pancreatic cancer that may lead to:

  • Weak or dizzy feelings
  • Chills
  • Muscle spasms
  • Diarrhoea.

Others types of pancreatic cancer can have very few symptoms for months.

Peter had a neuroendocrine tumour (a rare pancreatic cancer). He had bouts of severe abdominal…

Treating pancreatic cancer symptoms before getting diagnosed

Some people tried to deal with their symptoms themselves before going to see a doctor. Most people went to their GP at least once. Symptoms became so severe in several cases that people went straight to hospital.

It can be difficult for doctors to spot pancreatic cancer because the symptoms vary. It was common for people to have treatment for their symptoms for a while before any tests were done. Thinking about the delays in getting a diagnosis was upsetting for a few people we spoke to.

Peter says it’s important to be aware that doctors all have different skills and interests. They might not be able to spot pancreatic cancer quickly.
