Moazzam and Zubaida

Moazzam fell ill with Covid in October 2020, and was in hospital with for 4,5 months, including 2,5 months in ICU. He moved in with his 80-year-old mother in her ground floor flat after his discharge, because his own home had stairs he could no longer climb. Time of interview April 2021

    Before he fell ill with Covid, Moazzam worked as a courier. He is 51 and married with four children aged 11, 8, 6 and 2 years old. Ethnic background: British-Pakistani

  • Laszlo

    Laszlo was put into an induced coma because of Covid. When he came out of the coma he was concerned about PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and depression. However, he has not experienced this. He thinks that this is because he talks openly and shares his experiences with others. Time of interview October 2021

    Laszlo is Hungarian and works as an ICU nurse and educator. He is married with children.

  • Melanie

    Rhod was admitted to hospital in April 2020, and later transferred to the ICU unit where Melanie works. Rhod deteriorated on respiratory support (CPAP) such that he needed mechanical ventilation. Melanie was with him when he died. Melanie was interviewed for the study in December 2021.

  • Elizabeth

    Alexander was admitted to hospital with Covid in April 2020. When he continued to deteriorate, he was mechanically ventilated. Having suffered renal failure and an intercranial bleed, Alexander passed away after 22 days in hospital. Elizabeth and their children were present in hospital when he died. Interviewed for the study in October 2021.

    Elizabeth works as a nurse. Alexander worked as a network technician. Elizabeth and Alexander were together for 38 years. They have two adult children, one of whom lives close by.

    Neil developed symptoms at the end of March 2020. He spent 18 days in the intensive care unit, and a further 5 weeks recovering on the acute medical and general wards. Neil has found his time in hospital the the most life changing months [he] ever had;. Interviewed for the study in October 2021.

    Neil works as a manufacturing team leader. He lives in a flat-share with a friend. Ethnic background: White British

    Andrew was admitted to intensive care early in the pandemic. He was mechanically ventilated for a month. He has received follow-up care from a family member when formal follow-up care was lacking. Interviewed for the study in September 2021.

    Andrew works in IT finance. He and his wife had a baby almost a year after his discharge from hospital. Ethnic background: British Chinese

  • George

    George was the first patient to survive intensive care with Covid19 at his local teaching hospital. He was mechanically ventilated for 4 weeks. He has sustained permanent damage to his lungs and continues to experience symptoms 18 months after discharge. Interviewed for the study in September 2021.

    George works as a black cab driver. He lives with his three children from a previous marriage. They are 17, 14 and 12. Ethnic background: Black British

  • Johnny

    Johnny contracted Covid early on in the pandemic while at work as a nurse and wearing minimal PPE. He was in hospital for 2 months, which include 2 weeks on the mechanical ventilator in Intensive care. Interviewed for the study August 2021.

    Johnny is married and has two adult children who both have their own families. He is a nurse in the NHS. Ethnic background: British Filipino

    In April 2020, Ann contracted Covid from a resident in the care home where she worked. She spent 66 days on ICU, including days on a CPAP ventilator. Ann will need oxygen for the rest of her life, due to scarring in her lungs. Time of interview July 2021

    Ann lives with her husband and one of their three adult sons in the west of England. Ethnic background: White British

  • Geraldine

    Geraldine was in hospital and ICU with Covid for 22 days, which include several days on a ventilator. Her main motivation to get better was her daughter, who was in hospital herself. Covid meant that they could not see each other whilst both critically ill. Interviewed for the study August 2021.
