Biola found out about her HIV status in 2009 while pregnant with one of her older children. Although she had not breastfed before, she decided to breastfeed her youngest child to build a strong bond and have the experience of breastfeeding.
Biola is Black African and has a partner and five children, aged 20, 10, 5 and 3 years old and an eight-month-old baby.
Holly was diagnosed with HIV in 2014 when she was in her early 30s. Initially, Holly had intended to formula feed, she herself was formula fed as a baby. Recently, however, she and her partner have been considering breastfeeding because of the additional health benefits.
Holly is White British and is seven months pregnant with their first child. She lives with her partner, Stephen (also interviewed).
Nozipho found out she had HIV in 2013 after going for tests for a suspected yeast infection. On the basis of her medical history, doctors suggested that Nozipho probably had HIV from birth. She formula fed her baby even though this had not been her plan.
Nozipho is Black African and came to the UK from Southern Africa when she was 17 years old. She is engaged and has an 11-month-old baby.
Diablos was diagnosed in 2017. Her partner (and father of her baby) knows about her HIV status, but her sister does not know about it. Diablos formula fed her baby to avoid all risk of HIV transmission.
Diablos is Black African and has a partner and two children, one aged 21 years and an 11-month-old baby.
Fatima discovered that she had HIV in 2016 when pregnant with her first child. Her husband also has HIV and their family do not know about their diagnosis.
Fatima describes her ethnicity as Asian. She is married and has two children, a 3-year-old child and a 3-week-old baby.
Sandra was diagnosed in 2010. She had looked into feeding options before getting pregnant and knew that it was possible to breastfeed, however she did not want to put her baby at any HIV risk, so chose to formula feed. Sandra felt supported by her doctors to make her own decision.
Sandra is White Eastern European and is married with a two month old baby.
Marcy was diagnosed with HIV in 2014 during a routine health check. All her three children have been bottle fed. Marcy had wanted to breastfeed to bond, but was scared by the risk of HIV transmission.
Marcy is Black African and works as a support worker. She is single and has three children, aged 5 and 4 years old and one month old baby.
Stephanie found out about her HIV status when she got pregnant. Her doctors explained that breastfeeding put the baby at some risk but could be done safely. She tried breastfeeding for a few days but stopped because her breasts were sore and bleeding.
Stephanie has a partner and a 6-month-old baby.
Christine was diagnosed with HIV in 2004. Later on when she was considering having children, she sought more information from her clinic.
Christine is Black African and is in full time employment. She has a partner and a five-year-old son and is pregnant with her second child.
To remove all risk of HIV transmission, Emma formula fed her six-month-old baby and intends to formula feed her unborn baby.
Emma is White British and in a relationship. She has two children, aged 22 years old, and a six-month-old baby, and is currently pregnant.
