Janine

Janine had an emergency caesarean with her 1st child at 30 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. She had a good physical recovery but felt in shock'. 13 years later she was keen and confident enough to experience vaginal birth with 2nd child. She had a short but intense labour, birth was painful but amazing experience'.

    Admitted to hospital with pre-eclampsia, 1st son born 6 weeks premature, had to spend 10 days in SCBU. Found it very difficult to make decision of how to deliver with 2nd child, worried about risks either way. Had successful trial of labour with ventouse.

    Nicola has epilepsy, she was cared for during her first pregnancy by a Special Pregnancy Unit. She developed pre-eclampsia and had induction with epidural at 37 weeks.

    Melissa had an unplanned but otherwise straightforward pregnancy. But later developed Pre-eclampsia and had an induction. She had a difficult labour without pain relief and an episiotomy.

    After four miscarriages, baby in fifth pregnancy diagnosed with heart condition. Mother (who is diabetic) had pre-eclampsia and emergency caesarean. Severe sickness in every pregnancy. Interviewed during sixth pregnancy, and again after a stillbirth at 36 weeks.     Hanna was pregnant with her first child. She developed high blood pressure, and tests showed she had protein in her urine. She was kept in hospital for a couple of weeks before her baby was born by emergency caesarean section. Her baby was fine.

    Julie was expecting her first daughter and felt well through most of the pregnancy. But once she had passed her due date she started to feel unwell had headaches, distorted vision and high blood pressure. She developed pre-eclampsia and doctors performed an emergency caesarean.

  • Samantha X

    All went well during Samantha X's pregnancy, until a check at 24 weeks showed her blood pressure was very high. At 28 weeks she was admitted to hospital for checks. Samantha X's blood pressure continued to rise. Doctors decided to perform an emergency caesarean. Her daughter was born at 29 weeks and spent 7 weeks in hospital.

    Kate's pregnancy had gone very smoothly until she reached 36 weeks. She developed pains which she thought were indigestion, but soon became more severe. She had high blood pressure and doctors soon diagnosed HELLP syndrome. Her son was born by emergency caesarean and was fine although small.

    At a GP appointment at 32 weeks check it was discovered that Michael's partner (Helen X) had high blood pressure. Her blood pressure was monitored over 5 days, then HELLP syndrome diagnosed. Their son was delivered by emergency caesarean and spent 3 weeks in the neo-natal unit.
