Mara

Mara (age 18) was self-harming from a very young age and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at age 14. Therapy and support from her father and friends helped in high school. In college she started taking medication and studying Buddhism.

Sierra Rose

Sierra Rose's depression began in early adolescence, when she lived in a chaotic environment, moved frequently, and had some difficult family relationships. She also struggles with self-harming, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Her boyfriend is a huge source of support, and her cats bring her joy and keep her going in hard times.

Tia

Tia, 28, was shy and embarrassed about having no father. She masks her depression and refused a formal diagnosis. She stopped self-medicating, and does art to heal her depression. Work and relationships remain challenging.

Auberon

Auberon has had problems with anxiety and depression, and sometimes self-harmed. The doctor he preferred to see was very supportive, tried to go the extra mile', and booked him in for double appointments.

Shane

Shane was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. He was prescribed a high dose of antidepressant medication and overdosed (self-harmed) one night. He is no longer on medication and has weekly informal counselling with a GP he likes. He also takes part in events organised by a local charity.

Mohammed

Mohammad had a heart attack in his mid-50s and was found to be diabetic at the same time. He had a stent put in his heart, which later collapsed. He is on a minimum dose of metformin, which means his diabetes is mainly self-managed. He is very satisfied with the care he has received.

Angela

Angela was diagnosed with autosomal recessive Alport Syndrome. She received a kidney transplant after a year of home dialysis. During her dialysis period, she continued working full-time. At the present, her main focus is to stay healthy until her children grow up to be self-sufficient.

Nessa

From the age of 17 Nessa was in an emotionally abusive and controlling relationship with her children's father. She also experienced physical abuse from a subsequent partner. Although the marks on her skin from the violent attacks she endured have faded, the psychological effects of the emotional abuse continue to impact on her sense of self.

Victoria

Victoria met her ex-partner in 2011, and during the 15 month relationship, she experienced on-going and subtle emotional - psychological abuse which affected her self-esteem and confidence. Since leaving in 2012, Victoria is trying to move on and to once again find her inner peace'. (Video clips read by a professional.)

Becky

Becky experienced depression while at university, which got slowly worse. A difficult relationship break up in her final year sparked violent and aggressive behavior that was unlike her usual self. Mindfulness and CBT help her manage the ups and downs.
