Lindsay

Lindsay was 34 when she had her second pregnancy. There were no problems at 20 week scan but a few days later a life-threatening infection led to preterm labour. Lindsay's pregnancy was induced and her baby was born with a heartbeat but did not take a breath. Lindsay was 34 weeks pregnant with her 3rd child at the interview.

    Anna-May is keen to understand how to improve the care of children and their families by generating evidence to guide practice, identifying the best ways to assess the outcomes of surgery and learning from the experiences of parents.

    Anna-May Long is a Senior Registrar in Pediatric Surgery. Her areas of research interest focus on neonatal surgery; in particular the abdominal wall defects exomphalos and gastroschisis.

  • James & Clare

    James and his wife Clare had their first son at 40 weeks. He seemed well at first, but over the following weeks his bowels were not working properly, and he was in a lot of pain. It took a few months to get a diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease*, and he had surgery. He is now 5 years old and in school.

    James is 35 and a policeman. Clare is 40 and a HR consultant. They are married with two sons.

  • Hayley & Thomas

    Hayley and Thomass first son was born with exomphalos*. Born at 39 weeks, he made good progress for the first 5 ¬Ω months. But he had several complex health issues and infections. He passed away aged 7 months in hospital.

    Hayley is 33 and a childminder. Thomas is 35 and a business manager and they are married. Their son passed away aged 7 months.

  • Lucy & Jason

    Lucy and her husband Jason's son was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease* shortly after he was born. He needed several surgeries and currently has a stoma.

    Lucy is 33 and married to Jason aged 48. They have one son.

  • Emma

    Emma was pregnant with her second son when she became worried that he was not moving. She had an emergency caesarean at 33 weeks. He was diagnosed with oesophageal atresia with trachea-oesophageal fistula (OA with TOF)* and needed immediate surgery.

  • Barbara

    Barbara was pregnant with her second child when the 12 week scan showed that she had gastroschisis*. She spent 6 weeks in hospital, but is now a healthy 6 year old.

    Barbara is a university lecturer. She is married with two daughters.

  • Zoe

    Zoe was pregnant with her first child, who was diagnosed with gastroschisis*. Zoe was referred to a specialist surgical hospital 3 hours away. Her daughter was born at 37 weeks and had her operation when she was 6 days old.

    Zoe is a nurse. She lives with her partner and has one daughter.

  • Joanne

    Joanne's first daughter was born healthy, but at 10 weeks old became seriously unwell. She suffered a blood loss to her bowel, and had large section removed. She is now 7 years old, living with the complications of a short bowel.

    Joanne is married with three children. A quality assurance manager in the pharmaceutical industry, she is now a full time carer.

    When Michelle was expecting her third son, Harry's first child, they were shocked when scans picked up that their son had gastroschisis*. He was born at 37 weeks and had surgery. At 3 months old he was home and doing well.

    Harry is 41 and a management consultant. He lives with his partner Michelle and has one son. Michelle is 38 and a finance director. She has three sons.
