Maggie & Donald ' Interview 01

Maggie gave up work to care full time for Donald. Donald, aged 71 years, a retired civil engineer was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Donald died in November 2009 and Maggie is starting to adjust to a life on her own. She is looking at training for a career change in the future.

    Julie's partner was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in 2007. Julie and her partner tried to carry on as normal for as long as possible, and Julie cared for her partner in the last few months of his life when his health deteriorated rapidly.

    Henry cared for his partner Jane after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2005. She had surgery and chemotherapy. Brain metastases were treated with radiotherapy. He supported her throughout her illness and she died at home with her family around her.

    Ruth's mother was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer in 2008. Ruth described how her mother maintained a positive attitude and was not afraid of death.

    Sue's father was diagnosed with dementia after a stroke, although he had already been occasionally forgetful or confused. Sue, her mother and sister, looked after him at home for 9 months until he was moved to a care home after a fall, where he died.

    Emma began caring for her mother when she developed signs of Motor Neurone Disease. By getting end of life care funding and help from live-in carers, Emma was able to keep her mother in her own home until she died.
