Pete

Pete and his wife were both admitted to hospital with Covid19 during the second wave, in October 2020. While Pete's wife made a rapid recovery he was transferred to ICU, where he spent 15 days on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), followed by another 10 days on the ward. Pete continues to experience shortness of breath and fatigue 7 months after discharge. Interviewed for the study August 2021. Age at interview: 62

  • Jenny

    During the first year of the pandemic, Jenny was not particularly worried about her risk of falling ill with Covid19. This changed when her brother-law and a pastor from her church fell ill with Covid and died. Jenny was ill with Covid and spent nearly 8 weeks in hospital, including 9 days on ICU.     Johnny contracted Covid early on in the pandemic while at work as a nurse and wearing minimal PPE. He was in hospital for 2 months, which include 2 weeks on the mechanical ventilator in Intensive care. Interviewed for the study August 2021.

    In April 2020, Ann contracted Covid from a resident in the care home where she worked. She spent 66 days on ICU, including days on a CPAP ventilator. Ann will need oxygen for the rest of her life, due to scarring in her lungs. Time of interview July 2021

    Geraldine was in hospital and ICU with Covid for 22 days, which include several days on a ventilator. Her main motivation to get better was her daughter, who was in hospital herself. Covid meant that they could not see each other whilst both critically ill. Interviewed for the study August 2021.

    Jo had been ill for a year before being diagnosed and being admitted to hospital with Covid in February 2021. It is unclear how much of her illness was an effect of her Covid infection.   • Roger

    Roger and his family fell ill with Covid in October 2020. Whilst his partner and sons recovered relatively quickly, Roger became so fatigued that they called an ambulance. Roger spent 23 days in hospital, 11 of which were in the ICU, and was then discharged home. Interviewed for the study July 2021.
