Millaa - Interview 14

Millaa first experienced depression and anxiety at age 10. He was bullied during high school, and at 15 was diagnosed with depression and Asperger's Syndrome. He has attempted suicide several times in the past, but now feels a renewed will to live. Millaa attributes this to his strong bond with his siblings and friends, and desire to help people with diverse sexual identities struggling with mental health problems. He has found neither antidepressants nor counselling helpful.

    Paul first experienced depression triggered by memories of childhood sexual abuse. He has attempted suicide several times, but has had excellent support from both mental health professionals and family, and now feels he very much wants to live.     Alice was diagnosed by a psychiatrist with severe depression a year ago. She has suffered from anxiety for most of her life, and depression since her mid to late thirties. She has managed her mental health with the aid of anti-depressants, counseling, and support from friends and family (previously her mother and now her children) as well as various health professionals over time. Alice currently takes antidepressant medication (venlafaxine) which she finds to be helpful.

    Belinda was misdiagnosed with epilepsy in her early 20s, then referred to a psychiatrist and diagnosed with depression. With her first experience of depression Belinda took a low dose of sertraline which was helpful. However with her second bout she chose to see a psychologist and utilize a range of complimentary therapies which she found very beneficial.

    Rosie first experienced depression in the early 1990s when soon after their divorce her ex-husband took their two sons away to live with him, without her consent. Although she was later able to re-establish contact and a relationship with them, in 2006 her older son was killed in a car accident. This devastated Rosie and while she has lived through the experience, the pull of all-consuming grief and depression is ever present.

    Jane was at university when she first experienced mental health problems in the form of anxiety and panic attacks. Therapy helped these subside, but she then went on to experience postnatal depression (undiagnosed) with her first child, and both antenatal and postnatal depression with her second child. During her second pregnancy, Jane's depression was diagnosed and treated, and she made a full recovery.

    Anorexia in her teenage years was the earliest symptom of Shaz's mental health problems. At 19 she began seeing a psychiatrist whom she still sees today. Over the years, Shaz has battled many illnesses including depression, anxiety and asthma and has taken medication for a number of health conditions she is living with. She has attempted suicide a few times.

    Suzi has struggled with depression since childhood, and believes this stemmed from the effects of the way her family dealt with her mother's schizophrenia. She has attempted suicide and self-harmed a few times, however now feels she can deal with her depression. She sees a psychiatrist regularly and takes antidepressants (fluoxetine).

    Ralph first experienced depression in his mid-30s. Although he was diagnosed fairly soon after first experiencing symptoms, he chose not to pursue medical treatment and instead spent many years experimenting with alternative therapies. Gradually he came to realise that eating plain, unprocessed food made him feel better, and now thinks that MSG and other food additives are the cause of his depression. By following a strict diet, he has been able to make a full recovery.

  • Jack - Interview 13

    Jack had a breakdown at age 28 following a marital crisis. This prompted him to check himself in to a psychiatric hospital for assistance. After four months, he left to give his marriage another try, and when this failed, he travelled to the other side of Australia where he attempted suicide. Subsequently, he met his current wife, and has enjoyed a stable and happy family life, free of mental health problems.
