Arjun - father to Alisha, and husband to Rita - died of Covid during the second wave of the pandemic. Whilst he initially seemed to do well on non-invasive ventilation, he declined over a period of three weeks. Time of interview June 2021

Wendy has Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), which led her to be particularly careful not to contract Covid. However, in late December 2020, she fell ill, leading to a 3-week hospital admission, including nine days in ICU. Wendy was recovering at home at the time of interview. When his wife fell ill with and was hospitalised with Covid in late December 2020, John fell ill shortly after. He was in hospital for 30 days, including 12 days in ICU. After 5 months he had recovered at home and returned to work full-time. Time of interview May 2021

Emma spent 12 days in ICU in late December 2020 after contracting Covid. Her recovery included coming to terms with the possibility of getting Covid again. Interviewed for the study in April 2021.
Emma (41) works as a ward clerk in an A&E department. She and her husband have two children (15 and 16). White British.
Donna's husband Simon contracted Covid in January 2021 aged 68. When in hospital he struggled with his breathing, he was mechanically ventilated. After 33 days he deteriorated significantly. Donna and Simon's children were able to see him before he passed away. Donna was interviewed for the study in April 2021.

Chris was in hospital for 17 days (10 days on ICU with CPAP) between Christmas 2020 and early January 2021. Chris found the discharge summary helpful in his recovery, as well as contact with other patients. At the time of the interview (March 2021) he was back at work part-time and continued his recovery. Interviewed for the study in March 2021.
Chris works as a butcher in the family business. He lives with his father and mother, who also work in the shop. He is 33. White English.
Eight days after the onset of symptoms at home, Brian was admitted to hospital with Covid. Following the decline in oxygen levels over eight days he was admitted to ICU, where he spent six days on the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) mask. He suffered a heart attack. He was discharged home after a total of 20 days. He continued to be breathless seven weeks later. Interviewed for the study in March 2021.
Brian works as a roofing contractor. He is married with one child. White British.
After his wife had been in ICU with Covid in January 2020, he was himself admitted to hospital with severe Covid in December 2020. Royston was in ICU on CPAP for 7 days and two weeks on a respiratory ward. Two of his grandsons were admitted to hospital at the same time. Interviewed for the study in March 2021.
