Angela

Angela has had asthma and ulcerative colitis since her twenties and had a stroke aged 44. Her asthma is well controlled but her colitis has been worse since the stroke. She struggled with returning to work and eventually quit. She now has financial problems and is trying to start her own business.

    He was diagnosed with high blood pressure and diabetes aged 63. A week later he had a stroke and spent 5 weeks in a rehabilitation unit. Chris links his stroke to the stress of business failure, financial problems, being less physically active and drinking too much alcohol.

    Leonard has had two heart attacks and stopped smoking after the first one. Since his second he has developed coeliac disease, diabetes and arthritis. He links his health problems with having rheumatic fever as a child.

  • Derrick

    Derrick had high blood pressure and kidney problems for most of his adult life. He gave up work aged 42 following a mild heart attack and blackouts. He had a major stroke 10 years ago. He also has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma and can no longer walk without oxygen.

    Robert has had a back problem his entire adult life. He developed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) due to his occupation. Steroid treatment for COPD caused osteoporosis in his right hip and shoulder. He has had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmomary embolism and heart attack.

    Rosemary has type I diabetes, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), rheumatoid and osteoarthritis and hearing impairment; in the past she has had a heart attack, several strokes, tuberculosis and a collapsed lung.

    Andrew has had asthma and eczema since childhood. In middle life he developed pancreatitis, which led to diabetes 18 years later. He also has heart disease, a disorder of the adrenal glands, and prostate cancer. He recently had his appendix removed.

    He had a minor stroke in 2001 and spent 3 days in hospital. He is allergic to aspirin and it took time after the stroke to find a blood thinning drug that he could tolerate. He asked to be tested for diabetes because of his family history; he started on insulin 2 years ago.
