Theadora - Interview 38

Theadora's mother developed jaundice in 2004. After doctors diagnosed pancreatic cancer she had chemotherapy, which continued intermittently almost until she died in 2007. She found complementary therapies, such as reiki, helpful and changed her diet.

    Jacqui's husband Terry was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (previously known as emphysema) 16 years ago. As his condition worsened Jacqui provided full-time care, which she did for the last 10 years of his life. Terry eventually died peacefully with his family around him.

    Tricia's mother is 84 years old and has dementia. To begin with Tricia took on a lot of the caring responsibilities. However, as her mother became more confused she moved into a care home. Here she seems much happier and receives good quality of care.

    Lynne's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. A year later the cancer had spread to her lungs, liver and neck. Lynne juggled caring for her mum while working fulltime and found it very difficult to get the help and support they needed.

    Sarah cared full-time for both of her parents who had Parkinson's disease in the years leading up to their deaths, which occurred a few months apart. She was very close to her parents and describes caring for them as a long haul but a privilege.
