Christine - Interview 29

Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 years ago when she was 42. She received chemotherapy, radiotherapy to her breast and to her ovaries (which led to an early menopause), a mastectomy and tamoxifen. Cancer is no longer a part of her life.

    Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, after he noticed some itchiness in his nipple which later started to bleed. Had a mastectomy and was relieved that he did not need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. He took tamoxifen for five years. He had some problems with lymphoedema after his surgery.

    Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. He had a full mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. He stopped taking tamoxifen after two years because of the side effects that he experienced.

    Was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. Had a mastectomy and lymph nodes removed, then chemotherapy, tamoxifen and Arimidex (which he later took with testosterone replacement, Nebido). He later developed itching in his other nipple and had a second mastectomy in 2002.

    Derek was eventually diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 after his GP had been slow to refer him for a mammogram. He had a mastectomy, and chemotherapy, radiotherapy and tamoxifen.

    Michael was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000. Had a mastectomy and 11-12 lymph nodes removed, followed by radiotherapy and tamoxifen. Found another lump in 2008 which was also breast cancer. Had a lumpectomy, followed again by radiotherapy and Arimadex

    Tim was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. He had a mastectomy, radiotherapy and tamoxifen for 7 years. The radiotherapy caused some burning of the skin and he developed a wound infection that cleared with antibiotics.

    Carole was diagnosed with breast cancer 16 years ago. She received a partial mastectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She also received tamoxifen, which gave her severe side effects and menopausal symptoms. Nowadays, she feels physically and emotionally well.

    Dorothy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. She received surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. She thinks that cancer is always a bit in the back of her mind. She has done lots of fundraising for cancer charities since her diagnosis.
