Keith

    Malcolm started taking part in a medical cohort study in 2009. It has involved attending two hospital appointments ten years apart. The first time he had an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an ultrasound and the second appointment involved memory and cognitive tests. Apart from personal reports, he would appreciate getting an update about the study in general: about what it's being used for, how useful it's been and just a little update, a little summary every year to the patients would be well-receive.

    Anthony started to take part in a cardiovascular cohort study in 2007. Participation has involved medical check-ups, tests like ECG, blood samples, memory tests, and lots of question. In the last 16 years, Anthony has volunteered to two other medical studies. He feels that medical research is very important and taking part would be of benefit to other people in the future.

    Alan Y's participation in a medical cohort study came about when he spent time in hospital with a suspected transient ischemic attack (TIA). His two main motivations to take part were to understand why someone like him with an active and healthy lifestyle was affected with a health condition and, secondly, because he wants to help other people.

  • Roland

    Roland has a rare form of motor neurone disease (MND) called progressive muscular atrophy. He is part of a study using blood samples, scans and other tests to improve the diagnosis and understanding of MND. He has also agreed to donate his brain to a brain bank.
