In the current scene you’re seeing that the support and help and services are being given more to African women. But, it’s changing. It’s very different thethe impact is different now out there.

The African men have come out and they have seen for themselves that really by coming outand getting, accessing these services, getting involved, participating you know. Then they get to, they’re now getting to know a little bit more about the services, they’re getting more informed you know.

The resources are being put into, you know, the kind of thing you get… facilities, a bit of funding resource, support, you’re getting from professionals and from funders you know. You see that change and as a result of that they’re getting more help, the African men. They’re getting more support and moving on. They’re accessing more services you see. And they are, they’re getting training they’re getting employed.

So theres a problem… don’t disclose… don’t, don’t disclose. No it’s a diffic, you’ve got to keep a balance, sometimes you’ve got to do it, sometimes, you’ve got to be careful how you handle it you knowSome employer’s understand it, they, they are very sympathetic, they understand HIV issues. They understand that HIV positive people are employable… got… the policy… in place.

A number of people… got public and private jobs, in the mainstream jobs, there are quite a number of HIV positive people there. Because some of these employers they’ve got HIV policies in place. They are being much more aware about HIV, much more… about it. They are not any more ignorant they… or something. So they employ people. And they get more support you know as an employee.

They give more support to… HIV positive people, but not all of them, not all of them, and that’s… that’s… thing we are complaining about you knowEmployersshould educate themselves about HIV issuesand try to have policy in their place of work to be able to employ HIV positive people. They can work. To contribute to society, pay tax.

The good thing… is that the DDA, you know the Disability Discrimination Act which the government has brought in place, that’s really helped because HIV positive people have been included in it.

So if the employers throw HIV positive people out it can be taken to court now. About two, two and a half weeks ago, three weeks ago I think, an HIV positive person was sacked from a job, then he took the employers to court and he won his caseAfter assessing the situation you might find it is good to disclose. Sometimes it makes it easier thenf they have a policy in place.

Because some of the priests issome of them are really quite… quite unhelpful to be honest. They tell the congregation not to use condom and throw it away or don’t take your medication, you can be cured by coming to the churchthey continue indoctrinating the congregation to a point where some people have decided to throw away their medication and become very ill. But some priests address the issue much more positively than the others.

They are telling people not to, put away the medication… person is… SoOn the other side they are also quite helpful, you know the churchesHIV positive get quite a lot of comfort in the churches actuallythey meet a lot of other people there. You know those… sort of… can be very comforting. Depression and all that and you can discuss your issuesabout believing God and all that.

It’s been very helpful, along that line. Emotional support… in the churches. You meet other people, you talk freely, you are not isolated you are not alone, you know. If you are strong you can even disclose, the situation and you are strong and you can disclose the issue I meansome of the congregations are very supportive to HIV positive people.

You get, as I said, then you can get training, then you can get… then you can get employment… employed. Yes it is, it is a, it is a very, you know this, that could be also another reason. Some of them have got odd jobs out there.

Sometimes when we organise support groups they can’t come because they’re going to workand then the work they do at very odd times actually. Some of the work they do are veryare very anti-social hours you know. Some of them work overnight you know. Some of them do cabby, some of them are security work, you… you… you work, some of them work Saturday and Sundays, yeah.

Then when you organise something they say they are not able to come… to get the proper mainstream jobs with the stigma and the prejudice and the discrimination, some of them are notthey are not able to. Well no it’s across the board but at some point you find it’s more… sometimes you know… minoritiesAfricans. But it’s across the board, regardless, yeah.

Because now when you get, you get employed you, they’ve got to know or understand… someone is employed… has got… in place for HIV positive people, who do understand about the HIV issues. Because some of them can be very, very, very, aggressive theyIf they knew you can get sacked… employer knows you are HIV positive the stigma and discrim, the prejudice is out there…
