Fiona's 28 year old son has a long history of self-harm, which started when he was 9 after sexual abuse by his father. Fiona supported him through problems with drugs and alcohol and was relieved when he recently said he no longer wanted to die, though she is constantly vigilant.

Jo found out that her younger daughter was harming herself when she had a mental health crisis aged 19. Jo's experiences of her daughter's illness have influenced her professional treatment of young people who self-harm.

Jane's younger daughter started cutting herself when she was 14. She was referred to CAMHS after taking an overdose. Jane did not find this helpful, but is positive about contact with Harmless, a self-harm support organisation.
