Amy E

Amy was expecting her first child when her 12 week scan picked up that her daughter had gastroschisis*. She was born at 37 weeks and needed two operations. She is now three and doing well.

    Ally's second son was diagnosed with gastroschisis* when she was 12 weeks pregnant. He had surgery when he was 6 days old, and is now thriving.

  • Luke & Angie

    Luke and his wife Angie's third child was born at home. After 24 hours he was vomiting and had not passed meconium. They took him to hospital where he was diagnosed with Hirschsprung's disease*. He had bowel surgery at 2 ¬Ω months and is now doing well.

    Luke is 40 and a design consultant. Angie 39 and is self-employed, and home schooling their children. They are married with two daughters and one son.

  • Adam & Sonya

    Adam and Sonya's first baby arrived safely, without complications. But at 3 weeks they noticed a lump in her groin. She had a hernia in her groin that required surgery.

    Adam is 34 and a technology manager. Sonya is 31 and a primary school teacher. They are married with one daughter.

  • Rebekah

    Rebekah had her third daughter via a caesarean. Initially, she seemed a healthy baby, but was diagnosed with intestinal atresia* after she had trouble digesting her food. She had surgery to give her a stoma and then later to re-attach the bowel.

    Rebekah is married with three children who are all under the age of 3. She works as a wedding florist and is from New Zealand.

  • Julie

    Julie's second son was diagnosed as having a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)* when he was 20 weeks old. He had one operation while still in utero, and several more after birth. He is now a thriving 9 year old at junior school, but still has a tracheostomy* and needs 24 hour care.

    Julie is an IT administrator. She has four children aged, 11, 9 and four year old twins.

  • Victoria

    Victoria's first child arrived very early, at just under 26 weeks gestation. He was cared for in neonatal intensive care. He contracted an infection in his bowel and several weeks later required surgery to remove some scarring left over in his intestines. He is now home and thriving.

    Vanessa's second son was born 9 days early. He seemed fine at first, but developed digestion problems, diagnosed as Hirschsprung's disease*. He had surgery when he was 10 weeks old. He was 16 months old at the time of interview, and thriving.
