    Salma's participation in a parent-child cohort study came about around 2008. At the time, she was expecting her first child and was waiting in the hospital for a test. Her main reason for taking part in research was her interest in what causes certain diseases and how they can be prevented. In 2011, she decided to become more involved in the health research and became a parent governor.

    Derek is part of a birth cohort study. In primary school, he took a number of tests but cannot remember anything about them. In fact, he was unaware of being part of a birth cohort for some time. His parents did not talk about it and the first he knew about the study was when he started to receive annual greeting cards. He would be happy to be involved with the birth cohort again and would appreciate more information about the study.

    Malcolm started taking part in a medical cohort study in 2009. It has involved attending two hospital appointments ten years apart. The first time he had an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an ultrasound and the second appointment involved memory and cognitive tests. Apart from personal reports, he would appreciate getting an update about the study in general: about what it's being used for, how useful it's been and just a little update, a little summary every year to the patients would be well-receive.

    Anthony started to take part in a cardiovascular cohort study in 2007. Participation has involved medical check-ups, tests like ECG, blood samples, memory tests, and lots of question.
