Frances - Interview 07

Frances was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia after a variety of symptoms. She spent a year in hospital having intensive chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy. Once in remission she took maintenance chemotherapy tablets for a year.

    Mike was diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia in 2003 after a variety of symptoms. Five daily doses of cladribine chemotherapy put him into remission. During diagnostic tests he was also found to have kidney cancer, which was removed surgically.

    Julie was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia after experiencing weight loss and bruising. She had four courses of chemotherapy then high dose therapy and whole body irradiation followed by an autologous bone marrow transplant. She is in remission.

    Janet was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia after feeling run down and having a routine cholesterol test. Her illness is being monitored not treated. Her activities are limited by tiredness and breathlessness. She feels isolated and depressed.

    Neil was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia after feeling weak and lethargic and having a respiratory infection. He spent 7 months in hospital having 5 courses of chemotherapy as part of a clinical trial, which put him into remission.

    She was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia after experiencing tiredness, itching, diarrhoea, a cough and breathlessness. She declined a bone marrow transplant and takes Glivec alongside a range of complementary approaches to support her body.

    Blood tests for another condition revealed low neutrophil counts, which led to a diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome but he was later told he had leukaemia. He was treated with 4 cycles of various chemotherapies and is in remission.

    Luke was diagnosed with hairy cell leukaemia after feeling very tired. A six week course of intravenous pentostatin as an outpatient put him into remission. Five years on he still gets tired and has other health problems.
