Aley - Interview 37

Aley was diagnosed with biphenotypic acute leukaemia (BAL), a mixture of myeloid and lymphoblastic leukaemias, after donating blood. He had no symptoms. Two courses of FLAG-Ida chemotherapy and an allogenic stem cell transplant put him into remission.

    Joanna looked after her husband for ten years after he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. Although initial treatment put him into remission the disease recurred after five years in remission. Further treatment did not work and he eventually died.

    Susan was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome eleven years ago on a routine blood test. She has not had any treatment and is healthy and enjoying life although she gets tired and has to pace herself. She has a check up every two months.

    Deirdre was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia eighteen years ago after developing swollen lymph glands in her neck. She was on watch and wait for three years and has had two courses of oral chemotherapy since. She is currently very well.

    She was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia on a blood test after a hip replacement operation. She was on watch and wait for two and a half years then had chlorambucil chemotherapy and is watching and waiting again. She feels very tired.

    Elsa was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) after being treated for thrombocythaemia, a condition that has caused her strokes. Her MDS was treated with blood transfusions, EPO and G-CSF injections and cyclosporin. She is in remission.

    Jeff was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia on a blood test after developing an infected navel. He was at increased risk of leukaemia by previously having treatment for polycythaemia. Three courses of chemotherapy put his leukaemia into remission.

    Len was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia from a blood test taken as part of a routine BUPA health check. An ultrasound scan showed his spleen was enlarged. Len has no symptoms and visits his consultant every few months for a check.
