Anthony

Anthony has been involved in health research as a lay representative for about seven years. He started off by volunteering as a research participant and was then invited to join groups as a PPI representative.

    Rosie has been involved in health research as a mental health service user for about 12 years. She began by working as a service user researcher after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

  • Hazel

    Hazel has been involved in health research as a lay representative for about 6 years. She joined the Medicines for Children Research Network after beginning a long-term campaign to encourage the health service to provide syringes for parents for administering medication to children.

    Hazel is married and has three children, aged 36, 31 and 29. She works voluntarily with a charity for children with heart conditions and their families. Ethnic background: Caucasian/European.

    Margaret became a PPI representative about three years ago after she was diagnosed with cancer. At that stage PPI in cancer research hadn't been established in Northern Ireland, and she was invited to get involved in implementing it.

    Margaret is widowed and has one daughter aged 30. She is retired now, but previously worked providing information and support to patients undergoing radiotherapy. Ethnic background: White British.

    Catherine had been looking after her daughter who was hospitalised after an episode of septic arthritis in her leg when she saw an ad for a PPI member on an allergy, immunity and infection panel. She successfully applied and has been a member for over three years.

    Catherine is a self-employed telesales consultant. She is widowed and lives with her 14 year old daughter. Ethnic background: White British.

  • Anne

    Anne has been interested in health research and has been a patient and public representative for many years. She is particularly interested in research that looks at how the environment influences health. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the Institute of Physics.

    Anne has worked in optics and was a specialist contact lens consultant. She later moved into health research and physics. She is widowed. Ethnic background: White British.

    Charles has been involved in patient and public involvement in health research for about three years. The majority of his involvement has been in orthopaedic research.
