Debbie - Interview 19- Life on the autism spectrum

Debbie was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome when she was 35 years old after experiencing bullying in the workplace. She now does voluntary work and looks after the home for her father.

    Richard was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome seven years ago after being referred to a specialist diagnostic centre. He is working hard to change aspects of his behaviour for his wife and family.

    Cared for in her own home, initially supported by cleaner who had been with her for 20 years. Since the cleaner retired they have installed a live in carer. Arrangements for transfer to residential care in the near future are being considered.

    Carer is one of 4 daughters looking after their widowed mother. She has two daughters of her own and works as a script editor. Her mother never went to work.

    Her mother had been an independent widowed woman. They had hoped when they were able to move her nearby that this arrangement would be adequate for several years but before long she had to go into residential care.

    Her mother, a strong minded widow, bitterly resisted surrendering her freedom and finally had to be sectioned before being transferred to residential care. She died recently twenty years after the first signs of her dementia, in a nursing home.

    Gradual onset mistaken for depression. Diagnosis given jointly to husband and wife. Slow progression. Problem with restlessness and wandering. Very involved with the local Alzheimers disease society. He tries to involve her in decisions where possible. Initially prescribed antidepressants later given trial of Reminyl. Later benefited from sedatives and sleeping tablets.

    Jacqui's husband Terry was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (previously known as emphysema) 16 years ago. As his condition worsened Jacqui provided full-time care, which she did for the last 10 years of his life. Terry eventually died peacefully with his family around him.

    Tricia's mother is 84 years old and has dementia. To begin with Tricia took on a lot of the caring responsibilities. However, as her mother became more confused she moved into a care home. Here she seems much happier and receives good quality of care.

    Lynne's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. A year later the cancer had spread to her lungs, liver and neck. Lynne juggled caring for her mum while working fulltime and found it very difficult to get the help and support they needed.
