Georgina - Interview 06

    When young, Pete was abused by a child-minder and began to hear voices. Later he had long periods in in-patient care. Pete is now recovered and describes himself as a 'voice hearer'. He is Chair of the Hearing Voices network in Sheffield, amongst other roles.

    As a child, Ron was abused by a priest. He first heard voices at work and over the following ten years he spent six in in-patient care. He went to the Hearing Voices network in 1991 and began his recovery journey. Ron now works in the field of mental health.

    At 29 Janey was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Janey had a lonely adolescence, thinking she 'got it worst than most'. In her twenties things 'blew up in her face', and she was admitted to hospital a lot. She now manages her condition and works for Rethink

  • Stuart - Interview 02

    In 1991, after returning to London from Moscow, Stuart experienced extreme worry and paranoia. He moved to the country and was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1996. He was both shocked and relieved. A befriender from Rethink helped his recovery and he now maintains a distance from psychiatry.

  • Ceridwen - Interview 01

    In 2001 Ceridwen was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Having previously being sectioned and having spent time in an in-patient hospital, Ceridwen now lives with her brother and hopes soon to live independently with support from her family. Ceridwen does volunteer work and attends college.

  • Hardev - Interview 39

    Hardev was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and faced the prospect of life on dialysis. He had a kidney transplant in 2008, aged 68. The donor was his younger daughter. He is now very well and active in charity work.

    Harmanjit donated a kidney to her father in 2008, when she was 29. He was 68 at the time and faced the prospect of dialysis. Both of them recovered well. Harmanjit is now keen to raise awareness of kidney donation amongst British South Asians.

    Clare became a non-directed living kidney donor in 2011, aged 59. She wanted to give something back after having valuable help with overcoming alcoholism and anorexia. At the time of interview, Clare was recovering well.

    Maggie donated a kidney to an anonymous recipient in 2007, when she was 62. She recovered well and is keen to raise awareness of living kidney donation. She believes that the NHS should cover the costs incurred by altruistic donors.
