Grant

Grant was prompted to visit the GP because of problematic urination; his PSA score led to a DRE and bone scan and a diagnosis of 'incurable' metastasized prostate cancer in January 2007. He has received hormone treatment and radiotherapy.

    In 2002 David was prompted by a poster to ask GP about test for prostate cancer. After a first and second high PSA score he was immediately prescribed hormones by GP. A later biopsy confirmed prostate cancer and he had radiotherapy treatment. David is currently again receiving hormone treatment.

  • Bruce

    Bruce sought medical advice after experiencing changes both in his sexual potency and in his frequency of urination. Increasing PSA test scores and a biopsy led to a diagnosis of prostate cancer in December 2005. He started hormone treatment in January 2006.

  • John Y

    A series of PSA tests in 2004 while John was working overseas prompted a biopsy which did not indicate prostate cancer. However a later biopsy (May 2006) did indicate cancer and John returned to the UK for treatment. He had a radical prostatectomy in September 2006.

  • Michael

    Michael first asked his GP for a PSA test in April 2005 after learning that four friends had radical prostatectomies. His PSA readings increased over four years and a biopsy revealed prostate cancer in October 2009. He had brachytherapy in April 2010.

    Following a series of PSA tests which showed increasing levels of PSA Bob was referred onto a specialist by his GP. A subsequent biopsy revealed prostate cancer and he had a radical prostatectomy in November 2009.

  • Sab

    Sab thinks that the investigation of a chest pain saved him from a heart attack that was about to happen. He had several tests including an ECG and an angiogram. The angiogram confirmed that he had coronary artery disease. Six months ago he underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgery (CABG). He joined his local cardiac rehabilitation programme and increased his exercise routine gradually. He plays golf, walks regularly and works in his allotment.     Stanley had a heart attack and four cardiac arrests. He underwent primary angioplasty and had a stent fitted. He feels breathless so his hospital appointment to see the consultant has been brought forward by several months. He gave up smoking four weeks before his heart attack.

    James had a heart attack in February 2011 and a stroke in 2010. He had primary angioplasty and two stents fitted. He completed the six weeks cardiac rehabilitation programme and continues attending the weekly sessions as part of a local community health programme. James has made significant changes to his diet, levels of exercise and has given up smoking.

  • Mervyn

    Mervyn contacted NHS Direct after persistent chest pain and spoke to a doctor who sent a paramedic team to assess him. The ambulance crew took him to hospital and he had primary angioplasty and two stents fitted. He takes the following medications aspirin, bisoprolol, simvastatin and ramipril.
