Cathy and Fraser - Interview 04

Cathy and Fraser took part in screening for heart valve disease in 2009. Cathy learnt she had mild aortic regurgitation; Fraser's results were normal. (Cathy is developing memory problems, so Fraser fills in some details of her experience).

    Carolyn took part in screening for unrecognised heart valve disease in 2009. She was pleased to be told her results were negative, as she had expected.

    Norman took part in screening for unrecognised heart valve disease. He already knew he had some heart problems, and the screening confirmed he had a leaky valve. He was invited to attend a further appointment. We spoke to Norman twice, once after each appointment.

  • Victoria & Hugh ' Interview 41

    Victoria's husband Hugh has mesothelioma, which is a rare form of cancer normally caused from exposure to asbestos. In Hugh's case a tumour has developed in the space between his lungs and rib cage.

    Poppy's father Adrian was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and at the point of diagnosis only had a few weeks to live. During this time he stayed with his oldest friends. Poppy also stayed with these friends so she could spend time with her father before he died.

  • Jane & George ' Interview 39

    Jane's husband George was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2007. Jane quit her job and became his full-time carer. His MND was fast progressing and he died just 9 months after the diagnosis.

  • Theadora - Interview 38

    Theadora's mother developed jaundice in 2004. After doctors diagnosed pancreatic cancer she had chemotherapy, which continued intermittently almost until she died in 2007. She found complementary therapies, such as reiki, helpful and changed her diet.

    In 2007 Simon's wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was aged 39. She started the TeloVac trial. The chemotherapy was effective but the vaccine was not. She had more chemotherapy and also complementary therapies. She died peacefully in 2009.

  • Saba - Interview 36

    Saba's mother was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer 4 years ago after having appetite and weight loss. Ten weeks of gemcitabine chemotherapy had no effect on the cancer. She deteriorated gradually and died 11 months after diagnosis.

  • David & Fiona ' Interview 35

    In July 2006 David's wife Fiona, who was 40, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which was a shock. She had chemotherapy, which was not effective. She also tried alternative therapies. She died in December 2006. Her death was "largely peaceful".
