Jennie - Interview 36

Jennie was diagnosed with breast cancer in (1979) and bowel cancer in 1989. She received surgery for both, and had a breast reconstruction ten years ago. It took her almost 10 years to recover from the colon resection.

    Michael was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002, and received a prostate operation. Although his PSA is slowly rising, cancer has not had a big impact on his life. His PSA may rise high enough to start having an impact on his life if he needs treatment.

    Eric was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999 and received radiotherapy. The treatment helped bring his PSA levels down, and he is monitoring his PSA levels with the help of his consultant. Cancer does not affect him on a day to day basis anymore.

    Alan was diagnosed with prostate cancer 11 years ago. He received surgery, then a course of radiotherapy when his PSA levels began to rise. Nowadays, he does not think that much about cancer, but feels that he is still living with it rather than beyond it.

    Albert was diagnosed with prostate cancer 6 years ago. He decided not to have any conventional treatment, and is undergoing a course of alternative therapy involving some changes to his diet. Generally he feels well, and has put his diagnosis behind him.

  • Dorothy - Interview 30

    Dorothy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. She received surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. She thinks that cancer is always a bit in the back of her mind. She has done lots of fundraising for cancer charities since her diagnosis.

  • Christine - Interview 29

    Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 years ago when she was 42. She received chemotherapy, radiotherapy to her breast and to her ovaries (which led to an early menopause), a mastectomy and tamoxifen. Cancer is no longer a part of her life.

    Marion was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2003, and received surgery and chemotherapy. The chemotherapy left her with long-term nerve damage, which has resulted in burning sensations in her hands and feet. She sometimes worries about the cancer coming back, and wants to have regular checkups.

    Brenda was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 17 years ago, and was treated with surgery. She has a permanent colostomy but has learned to live with it. She feels that a positive attitude has helped her through.
