One day, at a church barbeque, a complete stranger, who was a GP, approached him and pointed out that there was a lump in his neck and recommended him to go to his GP. A few days later his GP examined him, announced that he had lots of swollen glands suggesting he possibly had a serious disease, and that he should go to hospital immediately.     Marie was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia after pains in her bones and groin. After two years of watch and wait she had several courses of oral chemotherapy with remissions in between. She is currently well but expects further treatment.     Ken was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2002. He received radiotherapy as the cancer wasn't operable. He now sees his GP for his PSA tests, but does not currently receive his test results. He feels lucky to have survived cancer.

    Carole was diagnosed with breast cancer 16 years ago. She received a partial mastectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She also received tamoxifen, which gave her severe side effects and menopausal symptoms. Nowadays, she feels physically and emotionally well.

    John was diagnosed with prostate cancer 8 years ago. He receives regular hormone implants, which has lead to some side effects including an impact on his sex life. He has accepted that prostate cancer is unlikely to end his life, and doesn't think about it much nowadays.
