Rosie

Rosie has alopecia universalis. She had rapid hair loss from her scalp in her first year at secondary school. This was quickly followed by the loss of other body hair. She has tried steroid treatments but found that topical immunotherapy treatment with DPCP (diphenylcyclopropenone) is most effective.

    (Text only clips) Laurel has had alopecia areata for 2 and a half years. Alopecia impacted on her confidence as she feels less pretty. Laurel recently shaved her head to fundraise for alopecia. This received local publicity which has taken the pressure off her to hide her hair loss.

    Emilie developed alopecia universalis when she was 4 years old. She remembers feeling very angry about her hair loss throughout her childhood. Over time, and with the support of loved ones, Emilie has grown more confident and accepting of having alopecia.

    (Audio or text only clips) Arti developed alopecia areata 10 months ago. She had a small initial patch which turned into more rapid hair loss. Alopecia has had a huge emotional and social impact on Arti, though she is coping better now since using hair pieces and wigs.

  • Annie Y

    (Audio or text only clips) Annie Y has had alopecia totalis since she was 3. She has worn wigs since the age of 14 and finds that most people are unaware that she has the condition. Annie Y thinks it's important to hear positive stories about living with alopecia and not just those focusing on stigma.

    Annie X first developed a bald patch in her hair when she was 11. She was prescribed a steroid ointment but prefers to use alternative therapies such as homeopathy. Annie X has struggled a great deal with the impact of alopecia on her self-esteem and confidence.
