Alice

Alice was 7 when her GP confirmed eczema. She has tried various emollients with limited success as well as steroid creams for worse flare ups. Moisturising with non-prescription lotions is a key way in which Alice now manages her eczema.

    Himesh was diagnosed with eczema when he was 10/11 years old during a stay in hospital with a serious skin infection. He has since been attending a children's dermatology clinic and, over the years, has used a number of different creams and other medications.

    Nigel has cardiovascular problems, type II diabetes and a history of strokes and depression; he is waiting for a hernia operation. He feels tired all the time and attributes his worsening health to caring for his parents. His diabetes is poorly controlled.

    Mohammad had a heart attack in his mid-50s and was found to be diabetic at the same time. He had a stent put in his heart, which later collapsed. He is on a minimum dose of metformin, which means his diabetes is mainly self-managed. He is very satisfied with the care he has received.

    Ann was fit for nearly 50 years and the onset of illness came as a shock. She was diagnosed with type II diabetes and then Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and has had a mini heart attack;. She found it difficult to match diabetes management with her lifestyle.

    Lee has had asthma all her life. She has type II diabetes with a family history. Weight is seen as a major factor in both conditions. She controls diabetes well with diet and exercise.

    Tammy began having complex partial epileptic seizures at 26. She developed Type 1 diabetes during pregnancy; the diabetes and epilepsy make each other worse. She is concerned about the stigma of epilepsy and the safety and effectiveness of medications.

    Steve started with progressive hearing loss around 15-20 years ago. He was diagnosed with a non-cancerous tumour of the pituitary gland 3 years ago. He recently had a double hip replacement due to a bone problem. His main issue is tiredness.

    Kevin was diagnosed with a childhood hip disorder at 7 years of age and still experiences pain in his hip to this day and walks with a stick. He had an industrial accident in 1993. In 1996, he was injured as a result of routine operation to remove a kidney stone. He also has learning disabilities and asthma.
