Kate

Kate, age 21, grew up with a father who had untreated depression, and an unloving stepmother. When young, she realized she was gay and engaged briefly in self-harming. After some brief counseling Kate has used journaling to heal her depression.

    Joey had some extended periods of low mood earlier in his life, but the first time he experienced serious depression was at age 25. He was stuck in patterns of socializing, drinking and minimal self-care that worked well for him while in college, but pulled him down in later years. Therapy, adopting more functional life skills, and regular contact with other people have been the biggest help.

    Jason's first serious bout of depression happened once he was away at college, but looking back he realizes he likely had mild depression during childhood. School related stress, problems in relationships, and family issues can make his depression worse. Supportive friends, getting help, exercise, and a change of scene often make it better.

    James (age 22) grew up in a tough neighborhood. He dropped out of school and was arrested for gun use. With no education and felony record he can't find a job. He self-medicates by smoking pot, was recently diagnosed and is awaiting treatment.

    Jackson, 27, experienced childhood abuse, father's suicide and mother's imprisonment. Diagnosed at 14 with depression and PTSD, he used and stopped medication. Therapy, self-care and coming out as a transgender male have healed Jackson's depression.

    Frankie, age 24, was diagnosed at age 13 and took medication briefly. Later on, medications (thanks to health insurance), listening to music and taking walks help her depression. She has an eating disorder and looks forward to getting professional help for it.

    Elizabeth was a sensitive child. She was diagnosed with depression and an eating disorder when she was in high school. The worst period for her was as a teenager, but transitions into and out of schools or jobs were also hard. Her husband is tremendously supportive, and her career as a parent educator is a source of satisfaction. Depression now has a minimal impact on her life.
