Sally

Sally's depression began when she was a teenager and her parents separated. She continues to struggle with it, particularly during times of transition. Medication has helped, as has her supportive boyfriend, her pets, and organizing her life with a combination of flexibility and structure.

    Ryan's depression began when he was 8 and entered the foster care system. He was diagnosed with manic depressive disorder and severe anxiety. Therapy, medication, supportive relationships, and expressing himself through writing and music have all been helpful.

    Ryan lives with his girlfriend and her family in a suburb but is looking to move. He works as a janitor. He is White.

    Pete's depression became noticeable as a young adult, but looking back he thinks he had some depression in childhood too. He does not have a medical diagnosis, but is being helped by therapy. He encourages others to get help when they feel bad. He does not want to try medication.

    Pete lives with his mother and cat in an apartment in a large city. He is Hispanic. He has worked various jobs in the past and is looking for work.

    Natasha (age 18) grew up in a small-town religious family. At college she was lonely and started skipping classes. Upon failing a class, she was diagnosed with depression and social anxiety. Medication and counseling, as well as having friends, have helped.

    Nadina continues to struggle with depression and anxiety which both began in childhood. She has never gotten or wanted a medical diagnosis. Drawing and illustrating and trying to improve the world are things that make her feel better. She has not tried therapy or medication.

    Nadina lives with her parents in a suburb near a small city. She completed college and works as a freelance illustrator. She is Caucasian.

  • Myra

    Myra (age 27), as a child was abused and bullied by peers, but her parents did not believe her. By age 14 she was seriously depressed. African American stigma about depression was a barrier to treatment. Medication and therapy since age 23, music, and her fiancé help.

    Myra is a musician works as an aide to older adults. She lives with her fiancé. She is African American.

    Meghan (age 18) had depression symptoms in high school but did not seek help. Depression worsened as she tried to adjust to college and deal with an abusive roommate. She saw a campus counselor briefly, and was prescribed medication by her family doctor.

    Maya (age 27) grew up in an emotionally abusive family and was diagnosed at age 16.. She also has complex PTSD, anxiety, and chronic pain. Healing strategies includes medication, holistic modalities, therapy and reading.

    Maya manages an adolescent program in a community center and lives with her boyfriend. She is Chinese American.

    Marty has struggled with depression, anxiety, and other issues since childhood. He has spent time in juvenile homes, prison, and hospitals. Medication, religion, his fiancé, pride in work and the prospect of fatherhood are all very helpful for his depression.

    Mara (age 18) was self-harming from a very young age and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety at age 14. Therapy and support from her father and friends helped in high school. In college she started taking medication and studying Buddhism.
