Whitney

Whitney, 29, was diagnosed at age 9, and later with bi-polar disorder. Family and school issues, suicide attempts, and drug use led to prison, where she got treatment. She lost custody of her daughter and has no job. Despite treatments, she is depressed.

    Violet, age 23, experienced depression beginning in childhood. She received a diagnosis for it at age 22. Since having a daughter at age 21, she has become increasingly proactive at addressing her depression with a combination of medication, working out, eating healthy food, and counseling. She is a part-time student who stays engaged but not overwhelmed by scheduling no more than three things each day.

    Teri, age 24, first had depression symptoms in high school. She was never diagnosed. Coming out, finding love, and counseling have rid her depression. She lives happily with her wife and a dog, and is working on a master's degree in counseling.

    Teddy, age 18, began experiencing depression in middle school. He was diagnosed by a psychiatrist. He tried medication but did not continue with it. His central sources of support include friends, his siblings, and a loving dog who makes him happy and who he takes care of every day. He plans to work with animals or making music.

    Sophie (age 22) was a shy child who received therapy within and outside school. At 14, she was diagnosed with depression and social anxiety. Cognitive behavioral therapy and being mentored to become a fashion designer cured her depression.

    Sierra Rose's depression began in early adolescence, when she lived in a chaotic environment, moved frequently, and had some difficult family relationships. She also struggles with self-harming, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Her boyfriend is a huge source of support, and her cats bring her joy and keep her going in hard times.

    Shayne, age 27, began to experience depression in high school. Other mental health issues have also played a role in her life, and she has an additional diagnosis of PTSD. Things got more difficult for her when she left a supportive home for college, but in recent years she has developed many effective ways of addressing depression including medication, therapy, exercise, and art. Friends, family and roommates are strong sources of support; cats are sources of humor and joy.
