Interview 15 - Chronic pain

Pins and needle, numbness and neck pain since 1996. Surgery' Neck surgery for cervical mylenopathy. Treatment' Physiotherapy before and after surgery. Pain Clinic given oral steroids. Pain management' NHS outpatient pain management programme. Current medication' gabapentin, amitriptyline.

    Back pain since 1981. Failed back surgery syndrome. Diagnosed with Arachnoiditis, 2001. Surgery' laminectomy, correction of laminectomy and spinal fusion. Pain management' Learnt through support group and books. Current medication' distalgesic, co-proxamol, maprotoline, oxycodone (Oxycontin) during recent flare-up.

  • Penny - Interview 52' Breast cancer

    Penny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, aged 37. She had a mastectomy, radiotherapy, tamoxifen and Arimidex. She also had her ovaries removed and has been clear of cancer for ten years.

  • Verite - Interview 51' Breast cancer

    Verite was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, aged 54. She had a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and tamoxifen. She had severe side effects with tamoxifen and switched to Arimidex and then Aromasin.

  • Interview 43' Breast cancer

    A malignant lump was found and she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982, underwent a mastectomy and was given Tamoxifen. In 1996 another malignant lump was found and she underwent a further mastectomy. The Tamoxifen was continued.

    He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997 and had a radical prostatectomy. Five years later his PSA started to rise again so in 2003 he had some radiotherapy and hormone treatment.

  • Interview 23 - Carers of people with dementia

    She has been able to cope with caring for her husband at home. He attends a day centre and he has regular respite care. She doesn't feel ready to consider full-time residential care for him but has felt it necessary to look out for homes which might be suitable.

    Carer who had been a teacher looks after her partner, a former policeman, who has Pick’s dementia at home. Diagnosed in 2000. Between them they have 3 children.
