Interview 56-Pregnancy

Two normal pregnancies. Felt well supported by midwives in making birthing choices. First birth was a water birth in hospital; hopes to have the same for second birth. More of this interview can be seen on the Healthtalkonline antenatal screening site as Interview 25.

  • Interview 15- Screening for beta thalassaemia

    Father knew he was a beta thalassaemia carrier. Mother discovered in pregnancy she was also a carrier. Couple had CVS and were told the baby had beta thalassaemia major. Since birth the baby has been well and has not needed transfusions as expected.

    Married couple, with on child aged 14 months. Mother aged 36, father 35. Both are solicitors. Ethnic background/nationality: White British.

  • Interview 24- Screening for beta thalassaemia

    Both parents are beta thalassaemia carriers. Had CVS in first pregnancy. Baby diagnosed with beta thalassaemia major and they continued the pregnancy. In three pregnancies since they chose not to have antenatal diagnosis and none of the children is affected. Some audio clips in Mirpuri. Sister-law also interviewed in English.

  • Interview 35- Antenatal Screening

    Combined nuchal scan/blood test suggested high risk; early results ruled out trisomies but subsequently diagnosed a severe form of Turner's syndrome. Couple decided to end the pregnancy; now pregnant again.

  • Interview 06- Antenatal Screening

    Third pregnancy, after two miscarriages. Nuchal scan suggested problems; CVS ruled out Down's syndrome but heart problems identified by further scan. Baby born March 2003, successful surgery completed.

  • Lara

    Lara completed the HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 12 to 13 years when she was in year 8 in 2013. Lara received the Gardasil vaccine which provides protection against cervical cancer and genital warts. She feels that the information leaflet she got at school gave her enough information about the health risks of the papilloma virus and the importance of vaccination.

    Lara is in full-time education. She lives at home with her parents and sister and she is a keen rower. Ethnic background: Argentinean/British.

  • Amelia

    Amelia took part in the HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 12 to 13 years in school year 8. Amelia feels that, at 12 years old, she was too young to understand all the health risks of the papilloma virus and about the benefits and limits of the HPV vaccine. She thinks it needs to be discussed during Citizenship lessons along with sex education, relationships, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • Delilah

    Delilah took part in the HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 12 to 13 years in school year 8. Delilah said that, during school assembly, a nurse talked about the aims of the vaccination programme. Delilah thinks that more information is needed for girls her age about HPV, cervical cancer and sexual health.

    Delilah is a full-time student and is busy working towards her GCSE exams. She lives at home with her parents and siblings. Ethnic background: English.

  • Paula

    Paula took part in the HPV vaccination programme in school year 8 for girls aged 12 to 13. A nurse during school assembly provided information about HPV and the vaccination programme but Paula thinks that more information is needed to build upon what has been learned in assembly about HPV, cervical cancer and sexual health in general.

    Paula is a full-time student and is preparing to take her Final GCSE exams. She lives at home with her parents and younger sister. Ethnic background: Argentinian.

  • Isabella

    Isabella received the HPV vaccine in Year 8, aged 14 as part of the National HPV Vaccination Programme for girls aged 14-18. A nurse talked during school assembly about HPV and the vaccination programme. But Isabella feels that an early school assembly may not be the best place and time to provide sexual health information as young people may be tired and not very attentive to what has been said.
