Mike

Although Mike's wife (Joanna - Interview 07) had caesarean with her first baby, they were advised she could try for a natural birth. Jo went into labour at home, 9 days overdue. A searing pain developed. She had had a uterine rupture which was undiscovered. Their baby died in utero.

    Karen was expecting her second son. After a healthy pregnancy she went into labour, two weeks overdue. When the baby's heartbeat became irregular doctors performed an emergency caesarean. Karen started to haemorrhage. Doctors were unable to stop the bleeding and finally decided a hysterectomy was necessary.

    Rachel was pregnant with her second child. She noticed that the baby had stopped moving and when she got to hospital was told he had died. After delivery she had a haemorrhage and developed amniotic fluid embolism. Doctors had to perform a hysterectomy to save her life.

    Mandy was pregnant with her first child. She developed Acute Fatty Liver and her son was delivered at 36 weeks. She started to haemorrhage and it was necessary to perform a hysterectomy to stop the bleeding.

    Alex was expecting her second child. Her twenty week scan showed a low lying placenta, later diagnosed as placenta praevia. She was told to be watchful for bleeds. At 26 weeks she started to bleed quite heavily and was taken into hospital, where she stayed until her daughter was delivered by planned caesarian at 34 weeks.

    Farkhanda was pregnant with her 4th son. She experienced bleeding throughout the pregnancy, and at 22 weeks was hospitalised with placenta accreta, later diagnosed as placenta percreta.

    Sophie was pregnant with her second daughter. During the pregnancy she developed a pulmonary embolism. Between three and four weeks after the birth, she had a haemorrhage, due to retained placental products.
