Alex

Alex has multiple sclerosis (MS), which has caused urinary incontinence. She has a suprapubic catheter, which she says is liberating and has improved her life. She prevents infections by drinking a great deal of water and having a daily low dose of antibiotics.

    In 1982, when Michelle was 16, she went into hospital for surgery to her jaw and woke up paralysed with a spinal cord injury (C6). She had a urethral catheter for 15 years and then decided to have a suprapubic catheter, which she finds quite easy to manage.

    Martin had a diving accident in 1978, aged 18, and became tetraplegic. He has had a urethral catheter for about 10 years. Martin used a condom catheter at first and then a suprapubic for 8 months.

    In 1986 Charles was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). In 2005 he found he had some urinary incontinence. He managed this easily with intermittent self catheterisation, but due to brachial neuritis, was unable to continue. Now he has a suprapubic catheter.

    In 1973, Badg fell off the ladder when he was trimming the garden hedge. He was 40 and married with two young children. He broke his neck and a serious spinal injury led him to being paralysed. He has had a suprapubic catheter for over 10 years.

  • Sharon

    Sharon's urinary problems started 22 years ago after a forceps delivery. She found it hard to pass urine and had urine infections. One day in 2005 she found it impossible to pass urine and had a suprapubic catheter inserted, which she has had ever since.

    Sara has multiple sclerosis (MS). One day in 1999 she found she could not pass urine. Since then she has had a urethral catheter. She manages it by keeping it clean, drinking copious fluids, having bladder washouts and taking nitrofurantoin, citricidal and cranberry.

  • Jade

    In 2003 (when aged 13) Jade was diagnosed with Fowler's Syndrome. Since then she has had a urethral catheter, and a suprapubic catheter. Now she empties her bladder by self catherisation. She feels well, has a positive attitude and lives life to the full.

    Jennifer had many urine infections and one day, when aged 19, found she could not pass urine. At first she tried self catheterisation and then a urethral catheter. She also had a sacral neuromodulator which had to be removed. Now she has a suprapubic catheter.
