Lauren

Lauren was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at the age of 20. Through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as an outpatient and her parents support she is now in recovery. Relaxation, making time for herself, and writing and playing music also helped Lauren.

    Katherine was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at 11. Due to the atypical nature of her condition, she didn't respond as well to conventional treatment. Hypnotherapy helped her change her mindset and start to get better.

    Elizabeth was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at 12. Through inpatient and outpatient care and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) she has learnt to control the eating disorder. She wants to be well to have a successful career in journalism.

    Andrew has experienced both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa since he was about 17. Counselling, moving away from home to his own place and having a supportive girlfriend have all helped him through to a better place for recovery.

    Jamie was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at 14. Initially receiving counselling through CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), he struggled to be referred to appropriate adult services. Jamie stresses the importance of raising awareness of men with eating disorders.

    Rebekah was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at 16. She has also had bulimia nervosa and was in hospital for six months. Rebekah is a Beat Young Ambassador. She loves reading and writing and has her own blog.

    Francesca was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa in early teens, which later developed into bulimia nervosa. She believes people will only respond to help when they are ready to get better, not if forced. Francesca never thought that she could even be able to enjoy eating but says now her favourite food is Thai.
