Vic

Vic's gout began while on holiday around 25 years ago. He did not want to take allopurinol at first but began taking it after a very bad attack. He now feels more in control of his gout and tries to just get on with life.

    Shirley was diagnosed with gout in her late 60s, after having other forms of arthritis since she was 27. She managed the attacks with ice packs and painkillers. Since having an operation to remove a lump from her toe joint she has had less pain.

    John has been experiencing attacks of gout for about 10 years. He has had about 15 attacks in the last 12 months. Gout attacks, combined with a recent stroke, have had a big impact on his everyday life. His GP recently suggested that he starts taking allopurinol.

    Naresh was diagnosed with gout in 1974 when he was 25. He has had attacks in his feet, knees and arms. Naresh takes 100mg allopurinol every day, and manages attacks by taking naproxen or colchicine. He has had three attacks of gout in the last 12 months.

    Val has had three attacks of gout in her big toe joint. She is unable to wear the shoes she used to wear before she had gout. Val takes 300mg of allopurinol every day, but does not feel confident that her gout is completely under control.

    Jean had two attacks of gout in her right big toe joint last year. Both of her big toe joints were replaced with artificial joints in 1998 because of arthritis. Jean takes allopurinol every day and has not experienced another attack.
