Kath

Kath was diagnosed with breast cancer, and has had surgery and chemotherapy. She is glad to have been a part of the 100,000 Genomes Project and contribute to research, but she believes that some aspects of communication with participants could be improved.

  • Rebecca

    Rebecca was treated for breast cancer and has undergone surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She agreed to participate in the 100,000 Genomes Project because it is an opportunity to help to research to help people. She thinks there should be more information given to the public about the project so people are aware of it before they are asked to participate.

    Rebecca is married with three daughters aged 12, 17 and 21, and one son aged 7. She works part-time as a nurse and is white British.

  • Bart

    Bart had a malignant tumour removed after a Bowel Cancer Screening test. He has since had further surgery to reduce the chance of recurrence. He was invited to take part in the 100,000 Genomes Project while waiting for an appointment at the hospital. He did so because he wants to encourage others to take part in bowel cancer screening, as well as to support medical genetic research.

    Bart and is married with one son and one daughter, who are aged 31 and 29. He is a retired head teacher and is white English.

  • Raymond

    Raymond was diagnosed with prostate cancer and opted for surgery. A nurse invited him to participate in the 100,000 Genomes Project and he agreed because he wanted to help others.

    Raymond is married with two children aged 35 and 33. He works full-time in the construction industry.

  • Richard

    Richard had bladder cancer which later affected his kidneys. He has had his left kidney and part of his right kidney removed during surgery. His consultant invited him to take part in the 100,000 Genomes Project.

  • Background

    Richard is a retired café/restaurant owner. He lives with his wife, and they have two grown-up daughters. He is white English.

  • Linda

    Linda took part in the 100,000 Genomes Project when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2017. She is keen to help with medical research and feels that it is the only way to move forward with cancer' and to help develop new treatment options and less invasive surgery.

    Linda is married with two daughters aged thirty-seven and thirty-five. She is now retired, but worked as a house matron in a boarding school. She is white English.

  • Grandma football

    Grandma football was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had a kidney removed using keyhole surgery. She feels proud to have contributed to the 100,000 Genomes Project and feels that the process of participation is done in a relaxed manner by well trained staff.

    Grandma football previously worked as a social worker, and is now retired. She has two sons and a daughter, and several grandchildren.

    Betty was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2017. She was invited to participate in the Genomic Project during a pre-op assessment meeting. She feels strongly about the importance of medical research.

    Betty lives in semi-sheltered housing, she is widowed and has three daughters, one of whom lives nearby. Betty used to be a local councillor and is white Welsh/ Scottish.

  • Aileen

    Aileen was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2016 and she underwent surgery followed by a six-treatment course of chemotherapy.

  • Background

    Aileen is married with two adult daughters. She is a registered nurse and a teacher. She is white British.

  • Julie and Mark

    Mark and Julie's daughter, Jenny, has Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Mark, Julie and Jenny were asked to participate in the 100,000 Genomes Project as a family. They hope that the project will give them more knowledge about their daughter's condition, and help others in the future.

    Julie and Mark are married. They have four daughters between the ages of 15 and 25, and are white British.
