Carolyn

Carolyn started doing patient and public involvement about 10 years ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent recurrences have kept her in touch with patient concerns and treatment developments. She initially worked to improve service provision before moving into working on health research.

    Tom became a consumer representative and started doing PPI about fifteen years ago. He works with numerous organisations, committees and groups in both health and medical research, and service delivery. His main research interest is in lung cancer, but he also contributes to research in other types of cancer.

    Maggie has been a patient advocate in research for about 12 years. She got involved in health and medical research after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

    Richard has been a patient and public representative for about 13 years. He got involved after being diagnosed with cancer. During treatment, he kept a diary that was passed from the health professionals and researchers treating him to the chief executive of a national cancer charity, who invited him to help with some research about information-seeking habits of patients.

    After having a heart operation, Francesco decided to give up his job. There is a history of heart problems in his family, so he wanted to do things he was passionate about while he still could. He has been a patient and public representative in health research for about 11 years.
