Brenda was diagnosed with colorectal cancer 17 years ago, and was treated with surgery. She has a permanent colostomy but has learned to live with it. She feels that a positive attitude has helped her through.

    One day, at a church barbeque, a complete stranger, who was a GP, approached him and pointed out that there was a lump in his neck and recommended him to go to his GP. A few days later his GP examined him, announced that he had lots of swollen glands suggesting he possibly had a serious disease, and that he should go to hospital immediately.     Jennie was diagnosed with breast cancer in (1979) and bowel cancer in 1989. She received surgery for both, and had a breast reconstruction ten years ago. It took her almost 10 years to recover from the colon resection.

    Marion was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2003, and received surgery and chemotherapy. The chemotherapy left her with long-term nerve damage, which has resulted in burning sensations in her hands and feet. She sometimes worries about the cancer coming back, and wants to have regular checkups.
