Harriet - Interview 1

Harriet was originally diagnosed with ovarian cancer aged 20 and though she has had some long periods of remission, four recurrences later she remains both vigilant and positive.

    Hayley discovered she carried a mutation on the BRCA1 gene after her cousin was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She has had her ovaries removed and is considering a double mastectomy. Hayley feels it's important to read about the BRCA1 gene and cancer to maintain control.

    Simone was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump in January 2006. She had two lumpectomies followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy because the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. She is now on Zoladex injections and tamoxifen.

    Goldie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989, which was successfully treated. Five years later she was diagnosed with lymphoedema, which she manages with a combination of exercise and arm sleeves. She has since had a knee replacement.

    Sheila was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago and had a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy. Sheila had to insist to get chemotherapy as it was not initially recommended. She feels more preventative care should be offered on the NHS.
