When her son came out, Kate says she was not necessarily surprised as Kate and her husband were expecting him to say it one day. Kate was surprised that she did not feel a sense of loss when her son transitioned. She explains that he is exactly the same person just with a different physical appearance, name, and pronouns. She wishes his school had been more supportive.

Her husband and his ex-wife go to all the GIDS appointments together and her step-daughter is due to start hormone blockers when signs of puberty start.

When he got older, they paid privately for hormone blockers while waiting for an appointment at gender identity services. She feels their interactions with NHS health professionals have been a battle and that her son is not listened to and feels discouraged at the progress in his care. She feels that NHS services focus much more on physical health and side effects and attach wholly insufficient weight to psychological or mental health consequences

They sought private gender counselling then a GP referral to CAHMS, and then gender identity services. After a two year wait for the gender identity services appointment they were disappointed with the lack of help offered and they now pay privately for gender-affirming care.

Mother of a trans child who is currently fifteen years old. Ethnicity: White British. Her child came out as trans when they were about eleven years old, just before entering secondary school. Adele says that she was shocked in a way, but not shocked in other ways. She believes she was lucky that her child was able to access a gender identity service after being on the waiting list for only five months, compared to current waiting times which are about two years. However, she says the service was not particularly helpful.

She describes her trans son's journey as a rollercoaster It all started when he was about five years old and would tell teachers and friends that he wanted to be a boy. He was not necessarily articulating that he wanted to transition and once he had a shorter haircut he was happy being referred to by his dead name and old pronouns, but was also adamant that when he grew up he would be a boy. It was when he turned about thirteen he officially came out as trans and from here on Lesley did everything she could to support him. The most challenging part her son's journey was the waiting times for gender identity services and the bullying from other school children.

When his son came out, aged 12 he did not necessarily understand his gender problems so started researching and educating himself on gender issues. At the age of 13 his son explained that he was trans. Ross's son has had multiple challenges in relation to his non supporting mum and also from prolonged bullying at school. His son is doing a lot better now since he has started hormone therapy. The charity Mermaids was a great resource for Ross to help support his son when he was going through these challenges.
