Despite Laura's concerns about her daughter's feeding and repeated visits to her GP the cleft palate was undiagnosed, causing a great deal of distress for Laura and her partner. Maria's daughter was born with a cleft of the soft palate that was not diagnosed until 24 hours after birth. Maria's daughter was not able to latch to breastfeed and this led to the diagnosis of the cleft palate. Maria and her daughter also have Stickler's syndrome, a condition associated with cleft.
