100th health condition covered!

Today the charity celebrated the 100th health condition to be covered on the website. We were taken over the line by the addition of 4 new sections on young people and skin conditions – acne, eczema, alopecia and psoriasis.

At an event in Oxford chaired by our Patron Jon Snow (Channel 4 News) an audience of 100 people listened and watched a series of short talks and presentations about young people’s experiences of skin conditions.

We at the charity were very excited that the project involved Tess McPherson, Consultant Dermatologist, whose mother, the late Oxford GP Dr Ann McPherson, co-founded healthtalk.org in 2001. Tess supported University of Oxford Researcher Dr. Abi McNiven who carried out the research interviews all over the country and created the skin conditions resource.

She said ‘One common theme my patients express is feeling different and alone with their issues. healthtalk.org offers access to other patients’ experiences 24/7 and has already shown power to provide high quality medical information and support to patients for many health conditions.’

‘I am personally very excited to be professionally involved in healthtalk.org as this charity was set up originally by my mum. I am particularly pleased that the skin conditions resources are the 100th sections on the website and honoured to be able to be part of this celebration.’

We share Tess’ ambition to help reduce feelings of isolation in young people with skin conditions, as do those people who took part in the research. Asked by Jon Snow about what it was like to take part in the research, Himesh Parmar, who shared his experience of eczema, replied ‘Liberating to be honest. I personally done it so that other young people who suffer from eczema and the other conditions can kind of relate.’
