Many people who discovered that they had high blood pressure had little or no idea what it was and what it was likely to mean to them in the future. As there are no apparent symptoms, the patient was often left wondering just how seriously to take it. The very fact that the doctor seemed to be taking it seriously could introduce anxiety. With others it brought the awareness that they needed to improve their lifestyle.

Some respondents said they did not feel in any way changed, but others described a change that had occurred virtually overnight – from someone who felt confident of their status as healthy and free from medical problems, to someone who felt conscious of their age, vulnerable, and aware of the risk involved in previously normal activities, which were now reclassified as dangerous.

This was particularly vivid for people who have had a family member or other close contact who had had a stroke. The only advantage of this anxiety was that it reinforced the belief that it was worth sticking to treatment, accepting the protection it offers.

Some people may have associated symptoms or side effects with the possibility of impending stroke, which could have been frightening. The increased risk of heart attack also caused great distress and, even though this concern was not as apparent in the interviews, some of the patients interviewed had gone through heart attacks.

Personal mortality became a real prospect for some, especially those who were concerned for the welfare of their children. This attitude was also reflected in the children of some patients. Others were concerned that diagnosis might threaten their financial security.

In relation to treatment, a number of concerns were raised such as what damage tablets were doing and whether they could lead to impotence. Also taking medication and monitoring diet acted as constant reminders of going from a ‘fit’ person to an ‘unfit’ one.

Some patients’ concerns were so great that they regretted having ever found out about the hypertension. Even more extreme were those who went as far as ignoring a doctor’s advice in a conscious decision to lead life as before.

A number were more positive and considered it best not to worry but try and get on with life, incorporating the need for treatment into everyday life rather than denying it.
